Nursery Crime

Rhyme

Sat in class with pen in hand

English teachers lesson planned

write us a poem, without any rhyme

you have a few days – there’s plenty of time

So inspiration i did seek

going through books for a week

and every page would set up the same

with two words a rhyming – without any blame

Sing a Song of Sixpence, Jack and Jill

Humpty Dumpty, all from the quill

of a master writer, who’d mastered his art

and educated fellows – would tear it apart

I did my best – and restored a piece

giving the rhymes their release

but end of the day – i’d return to that book

as i liked the original way that they looked

Sandwich

Scouting out the kitchen cupboards

armed with two ciabatta rolls

navigating your way through the meat in the fridge

dark red salami and piquant spiced ham await

with tempting tomato and cool cucumber

in reach in the salad drawer

coming together with mayo in a

heavenly combination

Quill

Quite the thing, the noble feather known as a quill

under the hand of the wordsmith

it paints pictures in type without a machine

letters form on paper through ink

lovingly transcribed by the writer with the sharpened nib

Expectation

Its a little thing…

Expectation

it starts with the little things

growing up as a kid,

you really want to ride the big dipper,

but end up on the small caterpillar ride instead

And you want the best of the ice-creams

you saved some space after lunch

but the outcome’s much smaller than the picture

those biscuits look like they’re munched

But the fellow behind this is not fickle

and he’s not as mean as he seems

though harsh it may seem at the start

he wants to fulfil your dreams

So that space in that tum is not full yet

there’s a place that is not out of reach

selling bonbons and fudge and candyfloss

that you enjoy walking down street towards the beach

Revisiting a published favourite…. #GBWO

The Inkwell

With Christmas drawing to an end, I thought I might share this piece I wrote for the Great British Write Off, hosted by Forward Poetry to get you in the mood for warmer spells.

Little Jim’s done something very bad!

He played a trick on his Mum and Dad,

enjoying an extra seaside tea –

Wolfing down the fillings with some glee.

It would not been as bad, before –

If bread had not met seaside floor.

And so, the butties, once so grand

have fillings that are mainly – Sand.

To avoid detection, he will sit

by the sandwiches – now full of grit

Whilst Mum and Dad wonders, what’s hiding in their tea?

That extra filling that’s come from the sea.
