Marathon

Marathon

pinnacle of the amateur athletes preparation

stood by the line , waiting for the sound of the air horn

twenty six miles following the road

alongside the record breakers and club runners

and teams in fancy dress.

Guiding the way, the marshals on the miles

leading the athletes to their goal.

Memories of London 2012 – Paralympics

Salford August 2012
There have been a number of camps throughout the city, hosting athletes from many nations and in many sports in relation to the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Brazil were no different, and used venues up and down the city from the Regional Athletic Arena at Sportcity  to the Manchester Aquatics centre on Oxford Road. Athletes also trained at the Amechi Centre for wheelchair basketball as well as Manchester Metropolitan University’s Sugden Sports Centre – who hosted athletes
for wheelchair fencing, Boccia, and Sitting Volleyball.

A couple of the vollies (including me) had fond memories of the training camp venues, as they’d been used at the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and also at prestige sporting events throughout the ten years leading up to the Olympics in London in 2012.

Now it’s not that the sport of Sitting Volleyball was new to me – I’d been part of the team that helped out when they hosted a Challenge match as part of the BT Paralympic world cup.  Upon hearing this news – the Volunteer Manager made me Team Leader for the Sitting Volleyball Squad!

In my role as Volunteer Team Leader, I assisted with court setup and aided the vollies on the Volleyball courts in the fine arts of the rules of the game and where we fitted in – in relation to the game and training – simply put “passing the ball back!” when instructed.

And the game was fast paced – the ball was constantly moving – if it wasn’t in the hands of the retrievers!  As part of my role – I was also became custodian for the volleyballs and the scoring system – putting them back in storage every day.

The Brazil team were warm and friendly visitors to the centre and were brilliant to help out.  At set times, the Brazil teams played Paralympics GB in a series of Warm up games – which we also helped as ball crew.

As reward for our efforts, each volunteer got a “Teamwork” Baton from LOCOG – London’s Organising Committee for the Paralympics.

All the volunteers were welcomed and thanked by the Manchester Management of London 2012, and I raised a smile when the Brazil Team headed up the Opening Ceremony at Rio 2016….

I worked with some of those guys….:)

Photos of my time at the training camp are at http://www.flickr.com/photos/inkdropk/sets/72157631198677864/

Hope you enjoy them as much as I did taking them

Cogs in the Machine

Written by Brian F Kirkham in response to the Daily post
Volunteer

Manchester 2012 – The Olympic Year

They turned up in their hundreds

to serve those landing in the city

to train, prepare and take part

in the pursuit of Gold, Silver and Bronze

Each with their individual role

A happy audience – the ultimate goal

Making sure the fans made their way to the game

Safe with a smile – that was the aim

Colourful characters – lining the street

a parade of marshals – who could not be beat

as fans from the world – arrived at a ground

and wanted to know how to get around

Cogs in the machine – with pointers and maps

Happy as one – helpful ladies and chaps

Treating the fans as welcomed guests

A team of vollies – that were the best

Argument

footballArgument

The fuse was lit at Half Time

but its a slow burner this one

was it a foul?

infringement ?

or just down right dangerous ?

Learned friends,

now debate

On Blue on Red

bringing up ancient history

in the process

They argue their sides

Was he beaten by skill

or was it the pill

of the overpulled shirt

too much to swallow ?

The Linesman Flags…

and there’s loads of handbags

as Ref points to the spot

Blue covers his eyes to

decision of the wise

and Red Cheers on the shot.

A Goal is scored, Argument put to bed

Case Closed, in the water dead

Red smiles on with apparent glee

Blue reflects on history

A poetic response to another Golden response from Paralympics GB

(Hannah Cockcroft, winning Gold in Rio)

Have you been watching ?

A Magical moment in the Rio lights

New wheels speeding down the track to a Gold

Neutrals and rivals all –

Astounded – The British girl

Has taken it….

Speeding through the competition,

(who won the medal then ? answers clear to see!)

The Runner (Paralympic)

A tale on the Paralympian, Johnnie Peacock – Dedicated to all the Athletes at @ParalympicsGB taking part in the Rio Olympiad

Runningtrack.png

It’s not just the short burst of speed

It’s not the ability for opponents to fear your name

It’s not the fancy kit that makes you fast

No –

Its all that work that you put in

(Not only in the training gym)

The time you give up to make you win

How far you go – it’s down to you

but at home we’re all cheering  the things that you do

in front of our TVs were all stuck like glue

So when you look down the Golden Track

when the pistol sounds – there’s no looking back

Chasing those medals and records of old

(Bronze, Silver and of course Gold)

Sprint (Paralympic)

In honour of Dame Sarah Storey – who’s just become the UKs most decorated Paralympian.

Dame Sarah Storey – Cutout Art by author from an original c/o Roadcycling.com

Surpassing all others on two wheels

Paralympic gold tally record – broken

Rio watches and applauds your achievement

In getting the record number of golds

New dame holding the record – that’s gone from the swimming stadium

To the Track of a different kind – the velodrome

Paralympians in Brazil

Salford, 7th September 2016

Right about now, Rio-de-Janeiro is beginning the 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil, the premiere event for Elite Athletes with a Disability.

Recent readers of my blog will know I helped the Brazilian Paralympic Squad prepare in their Training Camp for the London Games in 2012 in the City of Manchester.

Wheelchair Fencing, Basketball, Sitting Volleyball, and Boccia were the order of the day, and I became the Organiser of two great teams of Field Assistants

And although i’m not going to be there myself – I hope all the Paralympians taking part have a fantastic games in Rio. Good Luck to all competitors!

Golden Moments

In another place, whilst I eat my tea

Our brave athletes are going for victory

flying round tracks and fields of all kind

focused on goals in body and mind

Prepared for the task – with targets in hand

strategies made – and races planned

Zeus watches on as the events unfold

as Britain goes hunting for Bronze, Silver or Gold

And as world meets in Rio to follow the race

The athletes are focused on the first, second, third place

So as flame it burns – give the athletes a cheer

as medals are won and old records – disappear.
