Anything with chips

Charles George William Dupree

is a funny little kid – his parent’s agree

he’ll eat breakfast and dinner – without any fuss

but there’s something the doctors need to discuss

Why little Charlie will eat all on his plate

if only there’s a helping of chips to wait

Now fish and chips are whats called a staple up north

and most weekends Mum and dad would order forth

a helping of haddock with the tastiest tatas

and perhaps a pudding to enjoy later

but now little Charlie want’s all his food brought

like the chipped potato that his Mum and dad bought

meaning Pork chops and Beefsteak are cut up and sliced

and all vegetables have to be served up and diced

And its not just the veggies – its his puddings as well

but Charlie and his chums, they think its swell

eating his puddings served up like chips

with a custard sauce and a toodle pip!

Unappetising

A piece from #writeclub from inky

I don’t think I would eat Crocodile

It wouldn’t make me happy

I’d see myself by a riverside bayou

and ask for it to be served snappy

And despite being grilled by a top chef

and served up like a great hunk of meat

there’s something that would stop me dead in my tracks

completing this particular feat

It’s not the idea of the texture

or picking out bones or of teeth

but what the Crocodile had for HIS Dinner

before being served with a plate full of greens underneath

I

Classical scholars

sat in ivory towers

will tell you – being far away

there’s nothing better than

the tastes of home

II

Preparation

for the evening meal

is everything – Peeled and chopped

and ready – for roasting, grilling, baking or boiling

of course – salad greens? just need rinsing and dressing

III

Food Fads ? a kitchen for all tastes

Fish and Chips ? Pie ? or Chicken perhaps ?

brought together with carrots and parsnips

Served up on a plate with greens

or a round bowl with barley as a broth

Element

Food stuffs have funny names

They usually come from where they first were made

but in some cases – you can get away with it

Lancashire Hotpot can be made in Edinburgh

Yorkshire pudding can be served up in Cardiff

but Meat pie – needs Meat in its core.

something for the tin or coal miners

to keep themselves going, while working underground

you can also enjoy them, from your local bakers

Good heavens! you’ll cry – its just a sauce, made from

Roasting juices of the meat cooking in the oven –

Actually, they cheer in unison – its much more than that

Vegetable water and various seasonings are mixed in too –

You might even get a flavour of the drink you’re having with your dinner

While i was busy sketching away

in the kitchen, dad was busy

zipping around with tomatoes and beef

and carrots and onion, creating a wonderful dish, based

round the pasta shells that were

dancing away in boiling water, and a little olive oil

Bubble and Squeak

#fowc #food #christmas #leftovers

Salford, 26th December 2019

By the time the pans were in the sink

undertakings of the Christmas leftovers were being sorted out

bird of the day stripped down to its carcass and

boxed up – and placed in the refridgerator

like the vegetables left behind from the feast

everyone knew what was for tomorrows dinner

Sizzle – went the pan – as meat and vegetables combined

quickly in motion with the aid of a bit of oil and butter

unlike the meal before it – this had a flavour all of its own

encompassing all its ingredients and perhaps one or two more

as the smell of the concoction – drifted on the cold winter air – leaving the

kitchen and wafting under the noses of everyone nearby

Noodles

Salford, 23rd February 2019

They could be mistaken for spaghetti

but these wiggly worms are made of sterner stuff

egg yellow gives you a clue of their content

clumped together in a group they drop

into steaming water – with a drop of oil

they swim around till they soften

till they’re joined by the meat and the veg –

cooking away in another pan

and then coated in sticky, sweet and savory sauce

ready for serving to all and sundry

Meat pie

They lined up down the street

For a chance they got one

The kids on the grapevine

Whispering the news

The meat pies are in

The boys from baxendale

Made young men smile

As a waft of meat

Travelled from the chip shop

The meat pies were in

And wrapped up with chips

And a dash of chip shop vinegar

Young lads would follow their dads

Delivering Friday nights tea

The meat pies were in
