You just knew that Winter was on its way

Obvious signs were in the air

leaves in the local parks were covering the lawns

and thermometers in the house were in retreat

but elsewhere around the house

as the conifers casually watched

a tree at the back was screaming out a warning

“The temperatures dropping get out of the cold!”

Its leaves changed colour from green – to red and gold

and for wildlife, who hadn’t headed off to the sun

it was a sign to take cover – and off they did run

  1. I live in FL now but grew up in CT. The other day I could have sworn I heard a song bird that I used to hear in the spring up north. I wish I knew what bird it was but I was thinking maybe this is where they come for winter. It was strange how it was just a comforting sound.
