Off on a Walk

#writeclub #poetry

A writeclub piece, now reprinted for your delectation!

It’s great walking through

the local green spaces in Autumn

with the rustle of bright red leaves

and the sound of Mum and Dad Birds

building up their shelters

some might choose a warmer spot

but up high on a sturdy branch

Mr and Mrs Sparrow are doing a spot of DIY

Making occasional moves to pick moss and other greens

out of a nearby guttering

Up on a higher branch, in his forest suite

a squirrel attends to his larder

but everyone’s attracted – animal or human

to the smells sensationally dancing up the road

soy mixes with ginger and lemon grass

and red and green peppers bring colour

as the local takeaway cooks up a storm

like the summers never been away

Sweet and Sour, Anyone?
