Tulips in the snow (Public Domain)

The bulbs had sleeping all Winter

waiting for a small hint of Spring

they’d been waiting for the soil to warm up

and thinking of the colour they’d bring

So imagine then, to their surprise

when out of the ground they did rise

and the flowerheads dropped so see ground below

greeted by arrival of flakes of snow

Grass under snow, had decided to hide

away from the cold underneath inside

under the snow, set like a brick

layered on the ground , two inches thick

But the flowers awoke, their growing begun

and headed their petals up towards the sun

breaking their way out of the snow

and providing some colour as they continued to grow

So while on the ground its frosty and white

colours abound from morning and night

and while all the kids play in snow, frost and ice

they look at the tulips – and think they’re quite nice
