Chicken Soup

Its been cooking on the hob for a while now

blue gas flames keeping the cooking going

while the flavours mingle and merge

the star of the show has been bathing in a warm bath

while her co-stars have been cooking in the broth

carrots and onions, parsnip and turnip

together with the occasional green

regional variations see peppers and tomatoes

and perhaps the addition of garlic

(just don’t tell the seniors – that ain’t “northern”)

pearl barley or noodles give it bulk

served up in a bowl with warm crusty bread

a definite antidote to the retreating mercury

and the weather outside
