I love the smell of freshly baked bread
the perfect envelope for fish, meat, salad or fruit
it travels through the air
from oven, and the kitchen to those
waiting on the pavement outside
telling them in words of French English danish or belgian
I’m here and I’m ready to be munched
as French toast at breakfast, or a loaded sandwich at lunch
and while mum and dad spend a pound or two on a loaf
and a special something for after tea
little uns are looking and pointing to
a sweet little someone with sultana eyes and cherry buttons
smiling through the sugar glass window
