It might still be winter
but some creatures have to
replenish their larders
having feasted like kings
over Christmas and new year
That tapping noise you can hear ?
it’s Mrs squirrel checking out
the freshness of the produce
left out by the hazelnut tree
this morning
And those that don’t make the grade ?
a perfect place at the foot of the tree
for her young brood to play
hide and seek out in the winter weather
