There were warning signs

small indications that, perhaps

These chicken wings weren’t for you

but you bought them anyway

The red and green specks in the coating

where the peppercorns and onion floated around

flashing lights to all who saw them

They sizzled away in the oven

and the smell travelled through the kitchen

firecrackers landed on the porcelain plates

and coloured oil made their way towards the fries

Initial taste – you grabbed the taste of the tomato

as you sunk your teeth into succulent chicken

but seconds later – you’re reaching out for the water pitcher

Tongue and Lips tingling, as you’re hit by the scotch bonnets
