The Inkwell

from inkdrop – poetry, places and events

Salford 12th September

I have a vague recollection of cobble stones

These rounded square stones, that lined the roads

on the way to side streets and factory yards

a help for the rag and bone man or even the drayman

as they made their way round Salford’s streets

Walking over them, a bit of a challenge

even more if you’re travelling in a chair or a pram

crevices in each stone created a wobble

as the wheels hit the curves created in the cobble

Horses had no trouble, landing feet on these stones

but walkers in shoes felt each sharp edge in their bones

And travelling over them, made a carriage sway

as a wheel bumped along or even gave way.
