When you need to know the time,
a great great grandson of the sundial is
there to give its owner some counsel
cogs the same shape as its great grandpa in the town square
he’ll let you know the time day or night

The big clocks in Greenwich and Westminster
always seemed to chase their younger cousins
for while Tim kept the rest of time’s children
running at pace, the big clocks
wheels occasionally showed their age
where did those seconds go ?
Instant Zing to their clockwork hearts ?
Tick following Tock following Tick
provided by a simple copper coin
teaming together to ensure their
smaller family members
were kept on time – occasionally – one dropped
meanwhile the sundial
in the garden smiled
as it never lost a second
in response to the daily post Clock

Time moves
as the Earth goes round
the burning sun
moments pass by
Before the cog
a marker in ground
marked moments in time
shadows of the sun
Mechanical cogs turn
around in circles
turning the time
around and around
Seconds pass into Minutes
as Minutes turn into Hours
and as hours go by
The sun switches with the moon
The clocks second hand keeps moving
along with the earth
pushing the minute hand as
the hours move on
and events recorded by scholars
as the seconds pass on by
kept as a document of time
a thing called History.
