Something’s afoot
The trees around the house are moving – signalling
Outside – is really windy , rainy and blowy
Reactions from the local wildlife – take cover
Maybe its best to stay inside today

There must be something
wrong with the thermometer
for the man at the met.office
is suggesting we all
wrap up snug and warm
in the next few days
His colleagues and pals
say “its too warm for snow”
but its hiding in the clouds
while the winds are a go
waiting for a mercury drop
when on the grasses and roofs it’ll stop
So while it’s in clouds
the wildlife will stay
having their fun and playing away
till the flakes of snow land on the ground
and they head for their nests and burrows around

Imagine my surprise to see
something to make me smile at tea
reminding me of a place
that brought a smile upon my face
I was once a young cub scout
and played with others and learned about
making things, and knots and tents
and camping outside, quite content
I remember the beavers – who wanted to be cubs
and the games and activities , picking out grubs
making things for mum and dad
and telling them of the fun that they had
Now there’s a section – for younger ones too
They call em the “Squirrels” (I know they’re new!)
doing the things scouty for fun
and jumping and around and having a run
With Squirrels and Beavers and Wolfcubs abound
The scout families healthy with lots of em round
learning new things , in enjoyment and play
and enjoying themselves each and every day

The gardeners have been in
taking off tree branches
with extreme pruning
They say its to keep
the tree roots hid underneath
from tearing up the grass
The trees for their part
keep on growing
reaching for the sky
meanwhile birds and squirrels all
are hopping mad
as they’ve further to climb

Brushing against the flowers in the carpet of blue
listen out for the chimes as you walk
usually, you wouldn’t hear them
except – on this occasion – there’s only the
birch trees – and they’re not saying much
even the squirrels are being quiet –
listening to the noise of the bluebells as they
lightly sway in the
spring breeze
Promptuarium, 18th August
You meet all sorts in your local park
two furry vermine were scampering past the bowling green
when they both sought my advice on
where the tastiest seeds were
“The Hazel tree is off to the west,
but the Conker tree has started dropping its seeds”
I told them,
they paused , then headed for the conker tree
where they fed like kings
before nodding me a thank you
and scampering for some hazelnut dessert

Walking through the forest on a summers morning
the sun peeking through the trees to say hello
new hairdo’s for all – their old leaves forming a carpet below
they make a wonderful crunch as you step through them
and waking up to the sound of the leaves ?
a family of squirrels up high in the trees
what’s for breakfast ? say the kids
Hazel Nuts ? Yummy.
Whilst walking
Through the city green
I saw the leaves turn from
Green to brown
And watched as they
Drifted on the wind
Through the town
Local birds are confused
Amassed on the tops
And squirrels they wonder
Why their food has all dropped
It’s much too early
And not too late
So why go and forage
And hibernate?
The summer it leaves us
like the changing tide
and the wind changes course
as autumn arrives
Trees change their colour
from pallets of spring
and warm shades of autumn
to the eye they bring
As Mother nature turns leaves
from green to warm brown
Hibernating animals
begin to bed down
As Autumn paints pallet of leaves all around
Walkers feet all make a sound
as they meet with the carpet
of leaves on the ground
The skies seem much redder
and it quickens the night
as the darkness gets quicker
and the moon seems more bright
Colours of green disappear till its fate
and Winter waits for the snow
Mercury falls, and squirrels hibernate
as the birds to warmer climbs they go
Autumn’s upon us – time has moved on
Winter is coming – the summer has gone
