Persons three, go off
venturing the mad waters
of Salfords dockland
Paddles cut movements
through deep canal water
making large ripples
Safety in numbers
all wearing their lifejackets
should their boat capsize

In order to save themselves some pocket money
the sports fans find convenient side streets
parking off the main road on the way to the stadium
One by one, they move on to empty paving
ignoring the call of the parking charge
plastered on the nearby wall
Playing fields and abandoned land
Perfect Places for those with a nose (and Permit)
to Place a spot for incoming visitors
Kids sit forlorn – as their playspace
finds itself taken over for 48 hours
by hawkers with money on their mind
Traffic jams – a certainty
as kids take over the abandoned tarmac
for an impromptu game of rounders
A winter Olympiad poem, inspired by the Gb team
I watched in awe as off they flew
Down the run of ice clear blue
On a craft to generate speed
Carving through ice quickfast was the need
As excited crowds they passed on by
They cheered them on as athletes did fly
And they did this more than once or twice
Navigating track all covered in ice
Aiming to make the fastest time drop
Running through finish line before they did stop
And repeating the task to achieve bronze thru to gold
To beating the clock in the ice and the cold
in the kitchen
magic is performed
as
yellow butter
white sugar
brown flour
some eggs
and mixed fruit
join together in harmony
with the aid of nutmeg, cinnamon and mixed space
popped in the oven
and left to combine
they jump about in the warm
and become solid or baked
forming a most wonderful substance
a cake.
As the competition began to place
The audience and judges shivered in their space
As a young guard, who’d never done the job before
Created a draft inside on the competition floor
Now this might not be bad for contestants so bold,
But judges observing were getting a cold
Said head judge to colleagues, as he spoke to all
I think next year, it’s summer not fall
And sending out messages to stewards away from floor
I know it’s an open…but someone please…shut that door 🚪
In the great scheme of things,
new or old alike
take great attention to something that
engages them – and fills the time that they call “Free”
Reading good books, or taking part in sport –
equal in weight to
somebody who decides
to undertake the activity

Mammal that lives in the tropical seas
Aquatic in the way it moves and breathes
Natural resident of west Indian water
Animal that grazes sea floor as it please
two large flippers allow him to weave
enjoying the plants lying under his feet
Each a present perhaps from neptunes daughter
sumptuous food for an afternoon treat
Gliding across the ice like a top ballerina
rotating circles into blue ice with her blade
audiences applaud this brilliant ice dancer as she
circles around creating patterns on the ground
everyone appreciating each light move –
floating in the air as she spins
until the time comes for her to
land delicately on the ice…to receive her flowers

They turned up in their hundreds
to serve those landing in the city
to train, prepare and take part
in the pursuit of Gold, Silver and Bronze
Each with their individual role
A happy audience – the ultimate goal
Making sure the fans made their way to the game
Safe with a smile – that was the aim
Colourful characters – lining the street
a parade of marshals – who could not be beat
as fans from the world – arrived at a ground
and wanted to know how to get around
Cogs in the machine – with pointers and maps
Happy as one – helpful ladies and chaps
Treating the fans as welcomed guests
A team of vollies – that were the best
