It takes a lot to build a town

it’s not just bricks and mortar

but all those little things you

occasionally take for granted

The corner shop

The Lollipop Man

The local school

doing the best they can

The Bin Men keeping the local streets clean

and the local parks and gardens green

while gardeners plants the flowers and trees

so little uns can pick as much as they please

Mr Postie delivers the latest news

while mr Policeman looks for traffic and clues

and doctor and nurse makes sure everyone’s fine

while little uns go to their classes in line

And getting us safely from A to B

Mrs Bus Drivers taking us home for our tea

Not before travelling off to the shops so

Visiting Mr Grocer we pop.

Making the pieces fit

#fowc #modular

I

To keep the prices down

The chair and desk you are sitting at

Take a different form from the one in the showroom

They all fit flat to fit in the back of the car and

There’s a handy little hexagonal key – to help you fix

The pieces together

II

Technology is a funny thing….

They’re handing out computers in the form of kits

To the school children in Technology class

There’s a main board and lots of little add ons

to connect to it

there’s smiles all round – with lights and sounds galore

III

The strange thing about all of this –

there’s always one piece of the electric jigsaw

that doesn’t seem to fit

tweeks and turns you’ll try to get it in the box

then it’ll go back in the box – the cardboard one – for its not on the instructions

#poetry #learning #expectation

Salford 16th February

A piece on school visits

Three coaches rolled up in the car park

One blue, one black, one green

Passing auntie, the football and the shops

Traffic jams were no fun

Or Waiting for the man with the sign to

Pass go from stop

There were grumbles getting off the coach

Old Trafford exchanged for the war museum

Pupils listening to sir, bore on

The security …. more of the same, but

Out of a corner….a new name

Person from a new place….change of space

Tanks and planes…new things to see

Objects to touch….and all for free

People to tell tales of air land and sea

And your guide at the entrance is about the space

A person to turn to with a friendly face

Telling a tale of the car, plane and gun

Making your visit a bit more fun

Recipe for Learning

Salford 5th February 2020

The Fire pump issued to the Ferranti Works in World War II

A tale of a meet and greeter at IWM North, Manchester

Take a good handful of young minds

and interesting artifacts from a fire engine to a British tank

under some really unusual lighting

give them a tale of a teapot smashed and

hold their attention with items in a display – leave for 5 –

then let them handle an old helmet or two

! While you tell them all about it !

Capture it….

Enthusiasm

Young minds wondered aimlessly

around the museum space

hearing the sounds around them

as they found their place

The colour returned – to their eyes

upon seeing my trolley – to my surprise

and hearing a colleague veterans tale

it was like we’d found the holy grail

Stories were told as they wore the hats

and genuine interest grew from these cats

as enthusiasm blossomed around our bit

The teacher wanted to bottle it…

For as the veteran told his tale

the enthusiasm blossomed without fail

and communication started tween young and old

as a tale of the home front it was told.
