Old Friends

Note from Inky:

Cheers to

https://serafinajayne.wordpress.com/2017/02/09/friendship/

for the prompt

You’ve been around for a bit

going round in the same circles

but passing each other without noticing

You shared everything

from gobstoppers to pencil cases

and spots on the high school bus

Your paths met

a lifetime fork in the road

as you went one way, and they went another

You wandered where they ended up

No phone calls letters or e-mails

Till one day – a message – “You’ve got mail”

Arrangements made

and best suit pressed

for a meet of the whole year – most impressed

And as you reach, the dance hall door

your old friends sat waiting – like you knew them before

as you head out to venture the dance hall floor

Connection

by Brian F Kirkham

3rd August 2016

When we were younger

we played in the park

communicating between trees

through a piece of string

Walking hand in hand

through the marigolds

whispering sweet nothings

as we picked daisies

Playing games

Sharing laughs

on the swings

in the park

Growing up – still friends

but distance the great divider

as you flew over land

my feet on the floor

Good Friends apart

the string uncut

now sharing messages

over the internet

The reunion

Coloured lights flicker off
the big glitter ball
as you arrive at the dance
at the old school hall

Friends from your past,
Greet with a cheer
as you are the one,
they want to be near!

All of those faces, from days of old
Come into the warmth, and out of the cold
and the faces around you, don’t seem to have changed
You thought they’d forgot you
They all know your name

You talk with your chums,
remembering the time
when you were in French
Conversing your lines

And the girl you once fancied
is at the back of the room
Remembering the light
you gave in the gloom

You’re all drinking things
Not allowed in that time
as you reminisce with Bitter
or Vodka and Lime

Now she’s dancing wi’ Girlfriends
to a tune you both knew,
She’s 16 again
and you’re feeling Blue.

She walks across the hall
and calls out your name.
You raise a smile
and take part in her game.

And as she skips across sweetly
grabbing hold of your hand,
you both dance together
to the sound of the band
