Debate

Salford 15th February 2020

#Fowc #Debate

During the week, it was the hot topic of conversation

Election ? Europe ? no! none of these

But a culinary conundrum – which sandwich was better

A choice of Sausage, Egg, Bacon, or Cheese

The favourite – an obvious choice – but

Everyone wants their own bite of the butty!

Battery

#FOWC #Battery

Built from the farmers imagination

A number of hens laid a dozen eggs each

The effort was stored in tiny little cells

Then used to power the cooker that

Each egg was cooked on

Revolutionary! cried the farmer

Yelping as he consumed the hot fried eggs

Noodles

Salford, 23rd February 2019

They could be mistaken for spaghetti

but these wiggly worms are made of sterner stuff

egg yellow gives you a clue of their content

clumped together in a group they drop

into steaming water – with a drop of oil

they swim around till they soften

till they’re joined by the meat and the veg –

cooking away in another pan

and then coated in sticky, sweet and savory sauce

ready for serving to all and sundry

The Dragons egg

A verse for any Fantasy or Harry potter fan

by Inky

Some workers were digging
up pipes underground,
when a very large coloured egg
in the sand it was found.

Now, the foreman of th’ site
didn’t know what to do,
so he called up some keepers
from th’ local zoo.

The egg.. it was green,
and blue, brown and red,
and was lain in the ground
deep down in a bed.

A bed of red sand,
of twigs and of clays –
it looked as if th’egg
had been there for days.

Said the worker to foreman –
“where’d it come from?” , Said the Foreman – “Dunno!?!”
and just then the egg
it began to glow.

So the keepers arrived,
with their boss from the zoo,
with a team to see if
there was summat they could do.

“it could be a snake” – the zoo boss replied.
Some big builders turned – and ran off to hide!
As builders they gathered to mend their pride,
the keepers could hear a noise from inside…

The head keeper thought –
there was summat amiss,
as the egg it both glowed
and started to hiss.

The little creature inside,
was feeling awfully glum
as all that it wanted was its
Dad and its Mum

“No need for alarm!”, the zoo boss he said
“we need to give th’egg, some sort of bed
nothing to0 great and nothing so grand..”
so the builders brought over some big bags of sand.

So th’egg it was rested
in its warm sandy bed
just as two shadows
loomed overhead.

“Oh Heavens!” cried a builder
“Begorrah! Begad!
I think i’ve just seen
Th’ eggs Mum and Dad!”

Two big scaly dragons, one green and one blue,
over the heads of the people they flew.
The Head Keeper called for everyone’s calm –
he knew that the dragons, didn’t mean any harm.

And little egg it glowed brighter
as little dragon did peck
and Mum and Dad Dragon
landed on the deck

And Mummy Dragon landed,
as Dad flew over sky
as dragons egg it opened
and the contents it said “Hi!”

And Dragons’ smiled kindly
nodding thank you to the team.
They named their little lad “Burnie” –
who was their little red dream

They then made their Zoo friends happy,
as they watched three dragons at night
as Mum and Dad took little Burnie
Off on his first little flight.

And then, politely nodding
they said their thanks and goodbye.
As the dragon’s family headed
to their home up high in the sky!

Early Morning

Salford 23rd August 2018

Squeaky doors

are better clarion calls

than any alarm clock

on the market

Slumbered silence

broken by a cistern

attracts you to the noise

of the nearby main road

Luna’s departure

allows Ra to announce

“The morning is here!

it’s time to get up”

And motorised monsters

or kings of the road

make their way delivering boxes

either side of the tarmac

Solitary Swallow

converses with the neighbours

on a nearby roof –

tweets the news – no laptop required

The rumble of early morning traffic

cascading through the windows

is followed by the crack of an egg

falling into sizzling bacon fat

Kettle whistles through the concrete

up through the bedroom floor

your first cup of the day is ready

milk and two sugars ?

Eggy Bread

Egg

This ain’t no restaurant “French toast”

it’s made over burning logs

in the country air

Foundation for the morning

Set against a glorious sunrise

and cups of camp tea

Thick crusty bread

absorbed in a lake of

golden runniness

Bacon awaits its partner

as it cooks away

in its fat

Poor Man’s omelette ?

after a night on the hills

it’s the food of kings.

Knives and forks ?

or eaten as a sandwich

only quandry – sauce Red or Brown ?

Egg

Egg

every egg laid

at the chicken coop

has his or her day

served up as a

side alongside bacon 🥓

or three sausages

or combined with veg

to create a quiche lorraine

cooking slowly in oven

or whipped up in a

meringue or custard for a

tasty pudding

or left to grow up

and hatch 🐣 on the farm, to

make more eggs for tea

Up high in a tree

in a cosy twig nest

four little eggs

sleep where they are best

hidden away from their avian foes

protected from wind, the rain and the snows

mum and dad watching from a branch at height

keeping an eye on the eggs that are bright

Much like their cousins, whose shells are white

they sleep both at day, and mostly at night

till the time comes to spread their wings

and they taste the goodies their mum and dad brings

Yellow

Yellow

A Zesty colour

sign of the start of spring and summer

daffodils and daisies explode with colour

and marigolds make hay in the morning sun

Lemon sponge sits in the oven cooking slowly

for a farmhouse lunch –

Vanilla custard softly turning in a copper pan

as breakfast is served – a soft boiled egg

with toasted soldiers and yellow butter.
