Whatever you do
be careful with that zingy coloured fruit
as you carve through the peel for its zest
it’ll come back at you as fast as lightning
blink – and you’ll miss it as it flies headlong toward your eye
it’s a flavour that’ll make your tongue sing
and bring a tang to any fruit pie
but watch out – its a fruit that’ll fight back!
Zingy is how you might call it
each pore of the citrus fruits skin
holds a little bit inside
and as your figures begin to split
the fruit’s smell contained therein
escaping into the room
where it does reside
enhancing the flavour into which you’ve just bit

The humble lemon,
like its siblings the orange and lime
each segment is full of cells just
bursting with juice
as the fruit knife cuts through the peel to the zesty core
each cell in its way bursts – releasing
fresh lemon zest into the air
while drops of lemon fall onto fresh marble

I’ve never got my head around this
from Lancashire to Yorkshire, from Spain to Greece
I’d sit in amusement
as master chefs who made the grade,
cooking food as a show, Practicing their trade
toasting a poor citrus slice – within an inch of its life
(and occasionally catching the chef – causing strife)
presented with fish or meat with salad on wood –
it never really tasted how it should
the foodanistas would praise it constantly on the net
but do the same things at home – No – i’d bet
instead they post a falsehood on twitter
as burnt citrus isn’t tasty – it’s really quite bitter!
