An attempt at Oulipo

Salford, 15th May 2020

Anyone reading the inkwell, will know i like to write a bit of verse from time to time. For this particular literary challenge i had to switch each noun in the poem and replace it with a noun 7 words down

So, pulling out my old Longman’s pocket dictionary and my personal copy of BBC Books The Nation’s Greatest Poems, i flipped to a random page. Using the poem on that page , i created the Oulipo.

Here’s the original poem by Robert Frost – before we begin

Here’s my Oulipo take….. enjoy

Thoughts of a country milkman….by Inky

Whose woodwinds these are i think i know

His housekeeper is in the vines, though

He will not see me stopping there

To watch his woodwinds fill up with snuff

My little horseradish must think it queer

to stop without a farrow near

between the woodwinds and frozen lame-duck

the darkest exam of the yeoman

He gives his has-been belts a shake

to ask if there’s been some misuse

the only ottoman sounds the sweep

of easy wind and downy flan

The woodwinds are lovely dark and deep

but i have prongs i have to keep

and milk to go before i sleep

and milk to go before i sleep

The Moon, Sky, Stars and Sea

Salford 27th April 2020

#Napowrimo #writeclub #Dreams #Metaphor

The moon is a bright shiny Ten Pence piece

The sky is a furry dark blanket

The stars are little sequins reflecting on that blanket

The sea is a vast mirror, reflecting whats above

The Moon is a beacon for space travelling mice

The sky is the map they use to travel about

The stars are the destinations on that map

The sea the place they hide their spaceship

The moon lights up the sky at night

The sky keeps a kite up in flight

The stars play with the new thing in the sky

The sea watches on, and moves on by

Unlucky

#Socs

Source – The first three words from chapter 7 of “The Fourth Bear” by Jasper Fforde (Hodder and Stoughton,2006)

“Most dumped boyfriend”

The words on the medal read,

he’d placed the metal over his eye

to lessen the swelling to his head

He washed away the lipstick

from the cheek they’d kissed

as they skipped off with their new beau

oh! just how they were missed

The medal weighed heavy around his neck

but lighter than his heart

as every day he’d see them all

it almost tore him apart

But one day , by the water well

as they were out at play

another chanced a chance at love

and hoped he’d look their way

So collecting up some flowers , a bunch

he took the young girl out to lunch

they hung around for a while

and he asked her dad – to walk her down the aisle!

Surmount

#fowc #surmount #hill #challenge #health

It’s a hill i didn’t want to climb

notably rocky in some places

but with a little encouragement

and some would say

sheer bloodymindedness

I found myself in an ascent

ignoring the drop below

and heading for the summit

mystery ii

Salford 30th March 2019

#freedomofexpression #iscriblr #mystery

a response to iscriblrs wonderful mystery challenge…enjoy.

A strange thing happened the other night

Under the cover of dark

Something with a sweet tooth paid us a call

He snook into the kitchen, without giving us a fright

And sitting down at my birthday cake, he did park

Having eaten his slice, he went out the door

Lighting up the kitchen , as he passed by the walls

And leaving a trail of cake crumbs on the floor

Conquered

#OctPoWriMo

6th October 2018

You’ve been trying to climb that hill for a while now

facing off against its challenges

its crags, sharp sides and slippy hand holds

not to mention the wet slate underneath

dark purples your pals as you rose

overcoming every obstacle in your way

take in the rewards at the top

the view of the blue sky – its lovely.

Lines

DSC_0406.JPG

Thursday 26th April 2018

Camera used : Nikon D3100 with 50mm Lens

Sat in the toolshed (my workspace, where i compose this blog)

I took this photo in response to the photo challenge Lines as theres an awful lot of them in it.

with the feathered friends elsewhere – i saw the lines of solar panels on the roof – all set out in formation

then there’s the lines of branches in the tree behind the house

Lines of tiles lining the roof in very tidy order

and last but not least the lines of bricks in the end wall of the semi detached house
