Prolific : Tale of a tree

Prolific

My “little” Acer tree, in the back garden of the house

beginning another set of flowers to signal Spring

We bought it from a garden centre in the pennines , quite a few years ago now, and planted it alongside a couple of dwarf conifers and perennials to give the back of the house a bit of colour!

It was caught out by a really hard frost and snowfall in March, when it should have flowered then.  The mercury in the thermometer refused to budge, so it slept on till the Easter Holiday, and while i celebrated my birthday – one or two of the flowering buds popped out to say “Hello!”.  Soon it’ll be covered in lovely pink and white flowers, and (Northwest English Weather permitting) they’ll be there to brighten up the back garden all the way through summer and early autumn – when it’ll lose its foliage and it’ll prepare itself for the following spring.

Blackberries

Hidden away among a mountain of leaves

the humble blackberry grows on its branch

biding its time till a meeting awaits

when it drops down into a sugary pool

and parties with its pals

no selfies needed here – they’re all jammin’

Thorny

Thorny

Running through a rose garden

often ruins your clothes

Specially if you are wearing a woollen jumper

expect those knitted specialities to get

Snagged on a spike or two – creating a hole that’ll need to be patched

Unmellow

Hardly the mellowest flower in the garden

your bright colour screams for attention –

a central figure among the reds and the blues

look at me! you cry as people picnic on the green grassy lawn.

surrounded by you and your siblings

they agree as they feast on their banana sandwiches

and drink their old fashioned lemonade

you certainly brighten up the day.
