Watercolour

Roman Remains at Oludeniz , Turkey in Watercolour by B.F.Kirkham

Salford, Sunday 29th January 2017

A Watercolour painting of the Roman ruins at Oludeniz, Turkey

Mum and Dad were out of the house this weekend, visiting my little sister and her family,

A marathon session of CSI, NCIS and FA Cup football were planned – and went very well,

(Manchester Utd winning 4-0 on the big tv)

but in between times, i’ve been painting scenes from old holiday snaps and diaries

Rough pencil marks guided me around the page as i blocked out the scene in paint.

Colours used on this one –

Cerelean Blue for the sea,

Burnt Umber for the sand

Sap Green for the plants on the path

Vermillion, Burnt Umber, Crimson and Yellow Ochre for the bricks

Sap Green was used for the Cats eyes

Vermillion , Burnt umber and Crimson for the Cats Fur

Eyes and mouth detail were painted in camp black

Background painted in Cerulean Blue

Almond

Admittedly, I like Almonds….

Like – when they’re scattered liberally over a bakewell sponge or

Made in to powder, and mixed with other ingredients for marzipan

Overall, the taste is really great in a cake

Nutty and sweet – from the seed that escapes from that

Delicately pitted light brown casing

Some would say – they’re delicious! (especially in chocolate!)

Tan

To some,

an absolute must – turning nut – brown

nicely under the summer sun

Toasting under the sun’s rays

As they enjoy a ice cool drink by the

nautical waters

To others, an unachievable goal

As they sit – in the sun – for a few seconds

Next minute – despite the sunblock – red as a lobster

Typical reaction to the sun’s appearance ?

Adolescent Teens hitting the beach towels

Noon till sundown

Turning occasionally

As they lie on sunloungers listening to tunes

Next to the swimming pool

Taken after the damage is done

A dose of soothing after-sun (or calamine)

Next morning’s sun worship – spent covered up

Valuable pigment from the Tuscan hills,

your golden tones are a sight to see

a valued commodity … from deep in the ground

many an Italian master painter 👩‍🎨

would have you there on their paint 🎨 palette

but it’s not gold that sets off your cherished demand

like pyrites of old, it’s your iron not gold

that sets painters hearts 💕 racing.

Born from a pod of red, a little white bean

Roasted till it changes colour – its liquid form

Out of the pod, is lovely in a cup – but its

When set in a mould and kept in a fridge do

Numbers of fans line up to collect its creation

Some would say,

It’s your magnetic iron that gives you your character

Earthy qualities you most definitely contain

Never understated – heated from your ore deep in the ground

Noted painters use you to create a picture of

Artisans pulling you from the ground

TOAST!

Cooked by the heat

of a thousand suns

the silver toaster’s

red hot grill

gently warms the

until golden brown

yellow butter melts

as the cook heads

Hot Chocolate

In response to the prompt

Pick Your Potion

Brown Gold.

That’s what it is, hot steaming liquid gold.

A perfect thing on a cold, frosty winters morning

A cup of warming hot chocolate.

It waft’s the aroma of something pleasing on a frosty day and warms up the fingers in the surroundings of a motorway service station.

Normally drunk by the cappuccino set as an alternative to their high caffeine fix, the coffee houses up and down the motorways have seen fit to get into selling it…and the Makers of the refined coffee cant wait to sell it

What flavour would you like ?- the barista asks

(Barista – supposedly the guy who blended the coffee or chocolate mix – but on this occasion – the guy who’s operating the fancy machine behind the counter)

Mint, Orange, Blackforest (A special for Christmas) or  Peppermint

I plump for Peppermint – pay the man behind the counter and sit down with my brew and a gingerbread man, as the vapours of chocolate and Peppermint travel through the air towards my nose

And as the mug transports the Brown Gold to my mouth, the ice begins to thaw – a perfect antidote to a winters morning.

Autumn Poetry Seasons

Autumn Leaves

The squirrels are a scurrying
amongst the fallen leaves
searching out the conkers
hiding in the trees eaves

Carpet, multi coloured
paints a walker a scene
an autumnal view, that carries a few
colours, of red, gold, brown, green

And as bird watcher goes a twitching,
the animals go have some lunch
As the watcher goes round, he cant help but make a sound
as the leaves underneath him go crunch

But lets give our thanks to the Autumn,
who’s colours are warm and so bright,
as Winter arrives, the frost and snow thrives
turning the leaves on th’floor white

A piece inspired by the picture, taken on an autumn morning in Ordsall Park , Salford

Over the Coals

several sausages
sizzle in the Noonday Sun
awaiting a bap

Hamburgers announce
readiness with aroma
as the coals they glow

Seasonings ? Brown or Red
Little people line up
in Anticipation

and over the grill
the most important question
onions or pickles?
