Olympia Landed

Some place, Some where

It began on a field of green

on a soggy spring day

And as the rain fell

muddy puddles splashed

as damp feet advanced

The grey soon disappeared

as speeds increased and

coaches unleashed new hurdles

Soon young minds engaged

beating Ra to the punch

and clock times were smashed

Leading to a moment

a time in the sun

where medals were gained, by leading from the front

Supercharged

Untitled-1.jpg

A poetic response to another Golden response from Paralympics GB

(Hannah Cockcroft, winning Gold in Rio)

Have you been watching ?

A Magical moment in the Rio lights

New wheels speeding down the track to a Gold

Neutrals and rivals all –

Astounded – The British girl

Has taken it….

Speeding through the competition,

(who won the medal then ? answers clear to see!)

Golden Moments

In another place, whilst I eat my tea

Our brave athletes are going for victory

flying round tracks and fields of all kind

focused on goals in body and mind

Prepared for the task – with targets in hand

strategies made – and races planned

Zeus watches on as the events unfold

as Britain goes hunting for Bronze, Silver or Gold

And as world meets in Rio to follow the race

The athletes are focused on the first, second, third place

So as flame it burns – give the athletes a cheer

as medals are won and old records – disappear.

The Great Manchester Run

Sunday 22nd May 2016

Location : Old Trafford, Manchester.

Today I’ve been doing a spell of volunteering with Sale Harriers.

I’ve been marshalling the Great Manchester Run…its been wonderful watching the runners on the Old Trafford Stretch of the course passing Manchester Utd! The weekend began at the other side of the city with the Mini and Junior Run around the Etihad Campus (Sportcity)

Even though they were hit by everything the Manchester weather could hit them with – We even had some Sun!!!   The race had its elite element with some of the worlds best long distance runners in the Elite Mens and Women’s races.  But it was watching the charity runners that did it for me.  Not at least, the runners running for Salford’s Brain and Spinal injury charity.  I could have sworn a pack of imperial stormtroopers passed me more than once 🙂  Hope the charity runners raised loads of cash for their chosen charities.

P.S.  I’ve read somewhere the runners were happy with their tee shirt this year – well, as a marshal i’m really happy with this years kit…a weatherproof jacket I can wear after the event without feeling like an advertisement board!

Legacy

Salford, 11th March 2016

In response to the Daily Post Prompt Legacy

CoMsImp

They say a Legacy is something left behind after you are gone.

Something to remember you by.

This is definitely true for the Legacy of the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002.

You see, it may have been a short sports competition, smaller than the Olympics but it led to so much more.

Athletics took off in a big way in the city thanks to the Commonwealth Experience. After the Glorious Competition which saw Sale Harriers Darren Campbell lead the Anchor leg for England in the City of Manchester stadium, the athletes moved in to the training track next door – the Regional Athletics Arena.  A perfect compact venue for athletics, and one that would host world class events, world, Olympic and commonwealth trials long after the track would leave the stadium and become a home for Manchester City Football Club.

And as part of that legacy. The Regional Athletic Arena has hosted training for schools and colleges around Greater Manchester, as well as worldwide.

The GMEX – Now known as Manchester Central – Hosted Judo and Badminton Contests during the games.  It is one of the largest conference venues in the country, but still hosts Concerts and Sporting Contests, Most recently the World Taekwondo Grand Prix.

Swimming was another sport which Manchester’s locals took to their hearts, as
in 2008 the city became host of the FINA world swimming championships. Training took place in the Manchester Aquatics Centre whilst the event Itself took place in the Manchester Arena, another commonwealth venue, which bedazzled the crowds with its wonderful lightshow and effects

Cycling is another sport which has benefited from Manchester, as home to the UK Cycling team.  The City has been proud hosts of the World Championships in 2008 and regularly hosts major Cycling Events in the National Cycling Centre – which now hosts a purpose built BMX track for supercross events.

When London was awarded the Olympics and Paralympics , Paralympic Sport was already in the eyesight of Manchester, as the city hosted the IPC Paralympic world cup event – covering a number of events in the lead up before and up to the London Games  – The Games Focused on Four Key Sports – Athletics, Swimming, Cycling and Wheelchair Basketball.  As the years progressed Sitting Volleyball and Boccia were added to the programme

The Australian Swim team trained at the aquatics centre during the run up to Olympics, and during the Paralympics Brazils Paralympians based themselves in and around the University Campus in Manchester, Focusing on Sitting Volleyball, Athletics, Wheelchair Basketball and Fencing. When the sport began in earnest – Old Trafford was the home of the group stages of the Olympic Football contest.

And every one of these events was manned by a cast of fantastic volunteers – some who have become personal friends along the way.  We received plenty of training in our roles and some have become organisers of volunteers at other events.

As for me – I continue my role with Sale Harriers at the Regional Athletic Arena and turn up at other venues when required…and my own reminder – hangs proudly on the bedroom wall – A commemorative medal and certificate from the Manchester games, and a baton from the London Games – then there’s the kits and the pins and the rest…A plaque dedicated to the 10,000 volunteers rests by the new athletic arena, by a glass wall dedicated to the gold medal winners

When the flag was passed on from Manchester’s games it didn’t stop the action, after all as the Banner at the Aquatics centre says – “We do things differently here

The Paralympian

DSCF1117.jpg
I watched the Sun Arising
on a new dawn
as the greats arrived
at our “little place”
The Superstars performing
with style and with grace
Teams talking tactics
were out in the hall
the teams with the skill
with two types of ball
And Hammers were set
and run ups aligned
as instructions were relayed
signalled or signed
As throwers came to th’pit
with their designed frames
ready to take part
in these Golden Games
And runners were focused
with medals at hand
and chariots lined up
with their strategies planned.,
The Blade Runners All lined up
to run out their race
with our Mr Peacock
out for first place.

A City United

As a sporting Volunteer in the county, I’ve had the honour of helping out at some great venues throughout Greater Manchester.

Manchester City – Etihad Stadium (c) Brian F Kirkham

This painting was created in Corel Painter Essentials by me.

It’s of the City of Manchester Stadium (or as the Manchester City Fans now know it, The Etihad).  The current home to Manchester City Football Club and the site of the Commonwealth Games Athletics Competition in 2002…I’ve helped out here on a number of occasions as an Event Volunteer.  Favourite moment ? Helping out at the UEFA Cup Final when Glasgow Rangers played Zenit St Petersberg of Russia.

Nearby is the Regional Athletic Arena – which hosts major athletic events in the summer season.  As a member of Sale Harriers Volunteer Squad, I assist judges with Marking and retrieving items during field competition.

This second painting was created in Adobe photoshop and is of Old Trafford Football Ground – Home to Manchester United Football Club and one of the venues used at the 2012 Olympic Games during the Football Competition.  I was a team leader for the ambassadors lining the route to the stadium on this one. Saved one or two taking on Manchester’s Rush Hour to get to the stadium.  Cheers, Chants, Vuvuzelas and songs – all in support of the world’s best playing in Manchester – for Olympic Gold

And my favourite fans I greeted to the stadium ?  Has to be the Brazilian Team!

Hurdles

A poem on challenge by yours truly.

A set of Hurdles

Hurdles are there,

to give you a test

an Obstacle to conquer

Just do your best

Normally found

on a school or sports field

they appear in new ways

to try make you yield

Beginning really small,

when you’re a girl or a boy

when all that you care for

is your favourite toy

Writing up letters

Tying up laces

learning to add up

and knowing new places

Standing up tall, and learning to play –

Having some fun in your own special way

knowing whats good, and what’s bad to eat,

saving those pennies for a special treat.

Meeting new friends who are growing like you

facing new challenges to learn and to do

Heading off camping, striking off on your own

Putting up tents in a team or alone

All this and more – you’ll pick up in your youth

I’ll tell you no lies – I’m telling the truth.

When going ‘cross hurdles – if truth can be told,

The prize is a good one – more precious than gold
