A tale of a street performer, inspired by Fandango’s Picture in the Flash Fiction Challenge

He Stands on his spot,

on the grass in the square,

doing his thing

while the others stare.

Today it is sunny,

so today – there’s a crowd

with his occasional movement

they cheer out loud

Sometimes a bird might land on his head

hoping for the chance that they might be fed

So inside his pocket – should there be a need

he has a small bag, of bird food or seeds

Little girl passing, trying to be brave

mirror man turns and gives her a wave

and watches others, as he gives them the time

in amusing but wordless performance in mime.

Salford 24th September 2019

You studied for three years for this

learning your trade from masters of the craft

reading from renown writers

and really digging in to the character of your role

Arrived at the set early

the place a hive of activity

your director goes through the script

with you and your fellow cast members

The ghosts of Olivier and Guilgud

watch in reverent observance

as make up artists prepare you

for your premiere performance

Final preparations

on location

crew checking site

for every eventuality

And as the spotlights fall

And cameras roll – under directors word

You give your immortal line –

“Do you want fries with that ?”

Angst of an Amateur Actor

Arts, BASIC

Dramatic

Although I like writing dramatic scenes, I don’t think i’m cut out for the stage.

I helped make a film back in 2009 for BASIC in Salford, but throughout the filming was more at home behind the camera than in front of it…

its all the remembering of lines, rehearsals, delivering performance and trying your best to cut out the ad-libbing

And as cover behind the scenes – there’s always something (or someone) to fudge your lines….Not easy to deal with a memory like a tea-strainer, and dealing with the resident drama queens.

My clearest memory of my patchy acting career ? Starring in a bit part of the School Pantomime – “Aladdin” – i’d been switched from one line to two – as I went from one Imperial guard to another…the biggest stresser – delivering the punchline at the end.

(co incidentally ….the film I helped make has won awards, and has been modified to suit the needs of the centre website)

The Lowry in Salford – Topic of the poem “The Musical Place”

A poem dedicated to the Millennium Landmark of the Arts – based right in my home city, by the banks of the Manchester ship canal.

There’s a place by Pier Eight,

at the end of the quay –

where people go looking for things to see.

I’m talking of Art from Present and Past,

and Shows and plays with memories that’ll last

And people they come from near and from far

drinking a coffee from the pre-show bar

as thespians make some last pre-show checks

behind the curtain, like some nervous wrecks

And paintings from famous painters they’ll see

like that one known as simply “Lowry”

and curators look on with a smile as they pass

looking at paintings from artist amassed

So, by day people look at the things on display

by night they take in a show or a play

And each night the performers prepare for the boards

behind the stage curtain – in front of the hoards.

And after the show,

for coffee they go ’bout

agreeing that they’ve had

One grand day out
